About USS-POSCO
Values

  • THE SAFETY OF ALL EMPLOYEES IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY
    • We will achieve the best safety record in the steel industry. Through collaboration benchmarking, “best practices” and root cause analysis, we will determine and provide the appropriate protective equipment, proper work environment, and training to accomplish this goal. We will audit activities and conduct drills to ensure compliance with UPI’s safety program. We expect all employees to take responsibility for their own safety, the safety of others, and be held accountable for their own actions.
  • SATISFIED CUSTOMERS ARE THE KEYS TO OUR SUCCESS
    • UPI will be our customers’ preferred supplier by providing unmatched quality, service, and ease of conducting business.
  • WE WILL ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF EACH EMPLOYEE
    • Performance excellence is expected from every employee of the company. We will provide an environment that fosters continuous development of employees' skills. Utilizing data and statistical tools, we will be innovative and creative in recommending solutions to problems and improvements in business processes. We will be professional in the execution of our duties and responsibilities.
  • WE WILL PROVIDE QUALITY PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT ARE COST EFFECTIVE
    • Being a low-cost producer will generate the return needed to invest in the business, provide financial security and career opportunities for our employees, and maximize return on investment to our owners.
  • TEAMWORK IS KEY TO IMPROVING OUR BUSINESS
    • Employee involvement and collaborative effort across all levels of the organization drive UPI's continuous improvement. Debate over issues is encouraged, but once a decision is made, commitment is expected from everyone.
  • WE WILL ALWAYS RESPECT THE INDIVIDUAL
    • Our people are capable, loyal, and dedicated to the success of the business. We will conduct business in an honest and ethical manner, and respect the opinions and ideas of others. We will treat all people with whom we interact with dignity and fairness.

UPI CULTURE

As one of the largest employers in the area, USS-POSCO contributes more than $150 million annually to the regional economy through its purchase of goods and services, employee payroll, and payment of property and local taxes.

Being a good corporate citizen goes far beyond dollars and cents. We take our responsibilities seriously to be good neighbors and participate in the communities where we live and work. We provide support to a number of organizations in the areas of human needs, culture and the arts, and education.

USS-POSCO’s Learning Center is a true community asset. It is open to all employees, and in many cases, their families and other members of the community.

Every year, we support the United Way through employee pledges and corporate gifts. Over 100 employees and their families and friends have participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s “Walk to Cure Diabetes,” raising more than $425,000 since 1991 and becoming one of the top fundraising companies in the East Bay. We open our plant for educational tours and student visitors. We participate in local Career Days, and offer job shadowing to give students firsthand experience in the working world. Many employees volunteer for several Education Outreach Programs, including Mr. Wizard electricity classes, Project READ, “Choices” presentations and Junior Achievement, to help fill the needs in our local communities.

We are also proud of our ongoing program to restore, protect and monitor our environment. Environmental excellence goes hand in hand with being a world-class manufacturer. Our environmental management system has been recognized through several national and international awards. And many of our environmental controls are state-of-the-art, including our patented ultra filtration system and thermal waste treatment controls.

A fleet of the cleanest ships on the ocean transports our steel across the Pacific. The ships were the first sea-going vessels that use selective catalytic reduction in marine diesel engine design, resulting in a 90 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.
